Overview

Course Outline

Year 1 (Stage One) provides students with a practical understanding of the fundamentals of ballet and contemporary Dance (Graham technique), with supplementary studies in Spanish technique and choreography work.

Year 2 (Stage Two) provides a practical understanding of the technical skills and artistry required by the profession in ballet, contemporary dance (Cunningham technique) and supplementary studies in jazz and choreography. The teaching aims for students to use this knowledge in a rehearsal and professional performance situation including solo and group pieces, and work for public performance.

A course in contextual studies underpins the practical dance training. These skills are essential in sustaining a career as a professional dancer. Through regular self-evaluation and goal-setting, students develop into successful reflective practitioners. The work of key practitioners in ballet and contemporary dance (from the 19th century to the present day) is woven throughout the course in both practical and theoretical modules and is used to inform stylistic and interpretative differences.

Successful completion of the course offers students the opportunity to the BA (Hons) (Top-Up) Professional Dance and Performance. This internationally recognised qualification establishes graduates as having outstanding achievement validated by a globally respected university and carries a value above and beyond a dancer’s performing career.

Year One

The first year of training focuses on helping you develop a strong foundation in classical ballet. Your tutors will welcome you to the school with a supportive class atmosphere where you will focus on building strength and technique. These classes are delivered in small groups to allow tutors to focus on each individual dancer.

Classical ballet classes will be taken six days a week alongside Contemporary, Spanish, Improvisation, Choreography, Dance Studies and Singing.

Throughout the year you will have various opportunities to perform leading up to the end of the year Summer Showcase performance.

Year Two

An exciting and demanding progression from first year, you will develop and refine the skills that you have learnt while becoming more technically proficient, independent, artistic, and creative. In the second year, you will continue your classical ballet training alongside classes in jazz and contemporary, while continuing to develop your improvisation, choreographic practice, and academic skills in Dance Studies.

There will be a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year to enhance your development as an artist.

Year Three

In your final year you complete your BA (Hons) degree with a top-up year as part of Ballet Central. During this course you will work as a company with your year group learning restaged classic repertoire from industry professionals as well as working with leading choreographers to create new works, touring around the country, and learning what it takes behind-the-scenes to put on a theatrical production. Third year takes Central dancers from students to professionals with real experience in a touring company.

Graduate Success

Xavier Andriambolanoro Sotiya, 2023 Graduate

"Some advice for the new first years would be being open to new experiences and really throw yourself into things that may be different which is still something I’m working on myself. It really does help having those experiences because it makes you feel a lot more prepared for the dance world."

Rachel Neale, 2023 Graduate

“I would like to thank all the wonderful tutors and staff at Central for their continued support.”
